Introduction

Skokie's convenient location is ideal for direct access to suppliers and markets and an experienced and well-trained labor pool. The area's business economy includes a highly diversified manufacturing base and strong retail, service, professional and financial sectors. Some of the country's finest educational institutions and cultural and entertainment attractions are located in and near to the village. The Village of Skokie boasts high quality housing in a variety of styles and price ranges. The businesses and residents also enjoy an abundant and reliable supply of water, electricity, natural gas and telecommunications services.

Skokie's industrial base is comprised of over 400 prosperous, well-managed companies; all defined as clean, light industry. Careful city planning and good enforcement of zoning regulations have made it possible for industrial expansion to continue simultaneously with adjacent areas where blocks of beautiful homes have been constructed with no conflicts between the two.

Taxes

Federal

Employer Identification Number (FEIN)

This federal taxpayer number is required by the government at the point when one becomes an employer. Partnerships, corporations and non-profit organizations also need an FEIN number. Sole proprietorships without employees may also obtain and use an FEIN number instead of their Social Security numbers on all business forms that ask for a "taxpayer identification number." State

Illinois Department of Revenue

All start-up businesses must register with this department. Information on income tax, sales taxes, sales tax exemptions, real estate taxes, and withholding taxes.

A Resale Certificate Number (allows a business to sell a product without collecting sales tax) must be obtained if the business manufactures a product and sells it wholesale or if the business sells a product purchased elsewhere.

A Retailer's Occupation Tax Number must be obtained. This number allows the business to purchase materials without paying the sales tax and sell retail, collecting the taxes and remitting them to the department.

Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES)

Through its Taxpayers Education Division, the IRS offers entrepreneurs monthly workshops to provide new or prospective business owners with current tax information and instructions regarding business-filing requirements.

Insurance

Every business (including businesses operated out of a home) should contact an insurance agent to discuss business protection against fire, robbery, vandalism and other disasters. Personal and product liability and business interruption should also be checked.

Under the Workers' Compensation and Workers' Occupational Diseases Acts, an employer is required to provide insurance for accidental deaths or injuries or occupational diseases of employees arising in the course of employment.

Patents, Trademarks And Copyrights…

In some instances, protection is needed for a product, service or idea.

A patent document must be prepared by a patent attorney and the inventor, and then filed and reviewed by the Patent Office.

A trademark is defined as any word, name, symbol or device, or any combination thereof adopted and used by a manufacturer or merchant to identify his goods and distinguish them from those manufactured or sold by others. Applications for trademark registration is made to the Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks, Washington, D.C., 20231, by the trademark owner or their attorney. State of Illinois registration can be filed with the Office of the Secretary of State, Index Division.

A copyright is a form of protection to the author(s) of original works, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, sound recordings and certain other intellectual works. Application forms may be obtained by writing the Copyright Office, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., 20540.

A wide range of resources from both public and private sector agencies are available to Skokie businesses. Over a dozen financial institutions within the Village limits provide a full line of banking services to business clients.

Jewish Vocational Service (JVS)
An accredited, non-sectarian, for-profit social service agency, which provides comprehensive job placement, vocational counseling, rehabilitation, and skills training services. JVS operates production shops providing necessary labor intensive secondary operations to business and industry and bids contracts in areas such as packaging, assembling, labeling and mailing.

*NTSW
A not-for-profit agency, NTSW fills the needs for retired elderly to remain productive by doing piecework for local employers. Handicapped young adults between the ages of 18-40 are helped to adjust to competitive employment. NTSW's rehabilitation program makes both missions possible.

Offers a number of services to businesses and other organizations. NEIU faculty can be made available to design and deliver in-house courses ontopics related to their academic and practical experience. Similarly, faculty can conduct small scale applied research projects on a contractual basis (marketing research, morale surveys, manufacturing methods, etc.).
